Spring Home Maintenance Tasks

Spring is upon us and it is a great time to get outdoors and tackle some maintenance tasks. If the winter weather conditions were rough on your home, you might be in need of repairs, but regardless there are many things you can do for a smooth and enjoyable transition into the new season. Here is a checklist of ideal spring home maintenance tasks.

Driveways and Paths

Freezing and thawing are rough for just about all hardscape materials. Walk around your property checking for damage to walkways, paths and driveways, then schedule repairs as needed. It may just require a patch, but it could need to be replaced entirely.

Termite Check

Termites are a common pest during this time. If you notice a swarm of winged insects flying out of a hole in the woodwork, this is a sign of termites and you should call a pest-control company to handle the issue immediately. You might be hesitant to spend the money at first, but taking care of this issue now will save money in the long run, and it will protect the structure of your home.

Prevent Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes present a real threat to our health, such as the West Nile virus and the Zika virus.

You can help prevent the gathering of mosquitoes around your home simply by getting rid of any standing water. Walk around your property and peek at your neighbors. If you notice any standing water, try to get rid of it as soon as possible. You can also use mosquito deterrents such as sprays, candles and traps to keep your outdoor living space enjoyable.

Wash Windows

The winter months can leave your windows grimy and dull. Wash them both inside and out for a lighter, brighter home indoors and increased curb appeal outdoors.

Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause your wood trim to rot so try to clean out the water stored by winter storm, then check for any necessary repairs.  Doing so early in the season can also help prevent damage from spring rains. Water should always be diverted away from the house so that no water collects around your foundation, causing costly damage down the line.

Screen Doors and Windows

Screens allow a breeze to flow in and keep the bugs out, which is very helpful in the spring, but only if the screens are free from holes and tears. Be sure to carefully check each screen and repair any rips, no matter how small. There are repair kits at most home-improvement stores.

Inspect the Roof

Winter conditions can be very damaging to a roof. You can simply make a visual inspection of your roof from the ground level, looking for missing shingles, damaged or missing metal pipes, or anything that simply doesn’t look right. If you notice anything that needs closer inspection or repair, contact a roofer.

Exterior Paint and Woodwork

If you’re planning to repaint your home’s exterior this year, spring is a good time to do it. Also, keep in mind that wood decks, fences, railings, and other outdoor structures will last longer if they’re stained or resealed once a year. Prepare for the spring season by taking care of any woodwork needs.
