Defensive Driving: How to Reduce the Risk of an Accident

Defensive DrivingDriving is a privilege, not a right. It must be taken very seriously, as it can be an extremely dangerous activity. The risks of driving are real and there are far too many accidents. Luckily, there are simple steps that can be taken to reduce your risks and help make the roads safer for all.

Sober Driving

Driving with any sort of buzz is obviously a dangerous behavior, yet too often drivers get behind the wheel with alcohol in their bloodstream. This strongly impairs judgment and slows reaction time. If you have been indulging at all, always designate a driver. Or simply only drink if you know you’re staying home.

Limit Distractions

You’ve probably encountered distracted drivers occasionally weaving while talking on the phone. It is always better to be safe than sorry. The text can wait! Driving while operating a hand-held phone has been made illegal in many states for a good reason.

Watch your Speed

A speed limit is in place for your safety, so exceeding this  means you choose to drive faster than was intended for that road, and also putting others at risk.

The faster you go, the less reaction time you have between you and other vehicles or any potential obstacles. As speed increases, so do braking distances and all other force measures that can lead to catastrophic collisions and rollovers.

Speeding also results in out-driving your headlights, so there will not be enough time to appropriately react to the unexpected when it appears in your field of vision. Always follow speed limits and be especially conscious of this at night.

Parking Lot Caution

It is crucial to be alert while driving in the parking lot. Many drivers are so focused on finding a parking spot that they aren’t watching what else is going on. Keep in mind that children can be very difficult to see (especially in a busy parking lot or at night). Children commonly run out from between cars. Backup cameras can allow for a better  look at the space behind the car that would otherwise be unseen; or even better, a rear cross-traffic alert can sense if there is a car approaching as you begin to back out of a space.

Drive the Right Car

Opting for a good-performing car with an excellent safety reputation and proven reliability can further reduce your risks.

The handling, use for controls, and visibility are all factors that greatly impact the safety of a car. Be very conscious of this when choosing a car.
