Meet Our Staff


Joe Barnes of Barnes InsuranceJoe along with his brother Tommy started in insurance by forming Barnes Insurance. He has served over the years with several insurance company advisory boards, including Travelers, Commercial Union, Ohio Casualty and Indiana Insurance Companies. In 1980, Joe received a Governors Appointment on The Committee to Reform Workers Compensation laws in Tennessee. Joe is a lifelong Sevier County resident and has been proudly involved in raising Tennessee Walking horses and was Co-Owner of the 2010 World Grand Champion – “The Coach”.

BetsyBetsy is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. She joined Barnes Insurance Agency in 1992 and has worked in just about every department of the agency. She currently serves as Vice-President of Marketing/Underwriting, overseeing all aspects of agency management.

Betsy obtained the insurance designation CISR in 2011 and is currently studying for her CPCU designation.

Betsy is a lifelong Sevier County resident, and lives in the Boyds Creek area with her husband, Tim. Their children, Madison and Mackenzie, are currently attending college.

Agent and Retirement Specialist

MichaelMichael joined his family owned-insurance agency directly out of Maryville College in 1982. He joined Barnes Insurance Agency in 2011. Michael handles all types of insurance, with an emphasis on commercial and financial needs.

As a lifelong Sevier County resident he is very involved in local civic organizations; i.e., the inaugural class of Leadership Sevier, Kiwanis (30+ years) and currently serves as a board member of The Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains. Michael has also served as Co-Chair of the 1,000,000 Capital Campaign, which helped launch the initial permanent building for The Boys & Girls Club.

Ben NorvellBen is licensed in both Commercial and Personal Insurance as well as Life and Health. Prior to joining Barnes, Ben was previously an agent with Farmers Insurance Group.

Ben attended the University of Tennessee and was a member of the “Pride of the Southland Band,” playing trumpet at both basketball and football games. After graduation, he was employed by the Sevier County School system, serving as Band Director at both Sevier County High School and Gatlinburg-Pittman High School.

Ben lives in Pittman Center with his wife Cassie, and beautiful daughter Ada Rose.
